We are still nearly a year away from Steven Spielberg’s next film, Ready Player One, the adaptation of Ernest Cline’s best-selling novel about a dystopian future and the virtual world that binds everyone together. But Entertainment Weekly provided a first look at the new film, with a single still of what we can presume is the main character in the new movie.
Published in 2011, this novel follows hero Wade Watts (aka Parzival) as he battles an evil corporation to find the hidden prize in a virtual world called OASIS that is effectively used by nearly the entire world. Along the way, he meets a cast of other avatars who at equal turns assist or hinder him on his quest. The book, steeped in ’80s nostalgia including Ferris Bueller, Monty Python, and Blade Runner references and an extended battle around the old coin-op game Joust, was a New York Times best seller and an instant classic among the sci-fi/VR set.
When Spielberg (an icon of ’80s cinema) announced that he would be directing the movie adaptation, fans were of course overjoyed. Although specific details about the movie have thus far been fairly sparse beyond casting, this screenshot does give us a look at what a player who is using OASIS looks like. The cast includes Tye Sheridan as Wade, Mark Rylance as OASIS creator James Halliday, Olivia Cooke as love interest/competitor Art3mis, Lena Waithe as best friend Aech, and Ben Mendelsohn as main antagonist Nolan Sorrento.
Some Easter eggs in this photo include a shot of what Halliday looks like on the cover of Wired magazine as well as a stationary bike similar to the one Wade uses in the book to power his OASIS system. Very sharp eyed viewers may also see a He-Man and the Masters of the Universe lunchbox on a table behind him as well as some old Garbage Pail Kids stickers. Considering the book was essentially about finding Easter eggs, expect many more such clue-filled photos in the months to come.
Ready Player One is scheduled to release in March 2018.
