Since the original film debuted back in 2004, Hellboy has been a name relatively synonymous with Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman. Obviously because del Toro directed both that and the sequel, as well as Perlman bring the character of Hellboy himself to life. While fans have been anticipating a third film for quite some time, it finally seems they’ll get their wish. Although, you should always be careful on what you wish for.
Earlier today, Hellboy comic creator Mike Mignola, announced via social media that there is a new film in the works. The most shocking part about it, was that both del Toro and Perlman were not stated as being connected to the film at all. The reason for that is because this will be a reboot, a rated-R version nonetheless. So now you’re probably wondering who the hell will direct, especially after del Toro did such a great job (my opinion) with the previous two films. Not to mention Perlman having a stellar performance (my opinion) as Hellboy too.
Don’t worry, as Mignola did reveal who will be taking over both of those roles. For directing they’ve tapped Neil Marshall (The Descent, Game of Thrones), and for Hellboy it will be David Harbour (Stranger Things). As much as I think Harbour can do the character justice, I’m wondering if he’d be able to play that role and Cable (if he gets it) in Deadpool 2. Shortly after Mignola’s announcement, THR did confirm that Millennium were in negotiations to produce the film with Lloyd Levin (Hellboy 1 & 2, Watchmen) and Larry Gordon (Hellboy 1 & 2, Watchmen). Dark Horse Entertainment’s Mike Richardson would also be attached to produce.
I’m still fairly shocked that Perlman isn’t a part of this at all, let alone del Toro. Although, I will admit that I’m glad they’re deciding to go with an R-rating over PG-13. As we’ve seen with the most recent string of R-rated comic book films (Logan, Kingsman, Deadpool), there is a strong market for those types of films. I also really feel it helps keep the movies closer to the comic books as well.
