Disney has been really breaking the mold in terms of the films that they normally put out. The days of princesses pining after princes, with the aid of a unique animal sidekick, are quickly becoming the ways of the past, and in its place are films that hold true value and merit. Take this past year, for example, with Zootopia and Moana, animated films that chose to reach for the bigger picture. Another standard being set by Disney is their recent ability to tap into cultures that aren’t normally displayed in animated format, such as the aforementioned Moana. Now, with Latin roots held tightly by the creators at Disney, we have the first teaser trailer to the unique tale of a young boy named Miguel who desires to play like the great guitarristas of the past, titled Coco.
The official synopsis says:
Despite his family’s baffling generations-old ban on music, Miguel (voice of newcomer Anthony Gonzalez) dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz (voice of Benjamin Bratt). Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead following a mysterious chain of events. Along the way, he meets charming trickster Hector (voice of Gael García Bernal), and together, they set off on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel’s family history. Character actress Renée Victor also joins the cast as Abuelita, Miguel’s grandmother.
