When Nintendo held its Japanese press conference last month for the upcoming console Switch, one of the announcements made was that they would be charging for their online services. Hopefully this will ensure a better online experience than what was offered on Wii U. Since PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold offer free monthly games for their annual $60 price tag, what is Nintendo offering us?
One free NES or SNES game per month, but you’ll have to buy it when the month is over if you want to play it again. Not the best form of compensation if you ask me.
Thankfully, it doesn’t look like their service will cost nearly as much as PS+ or Xbox Live Gold. Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima said in an interview with Nikkei Asian Review that pricing in Japan will come down to an annual fee of 2,000 to 3,000 yen, which is $17.60 to $26.40 American. “With paid [services], we will be able to fully commit to customers,” Kimishima said.
This is great news to hear, especially since it’s less than half of what the other game companies charge. However, it’s unclear if that will be the exact pricing in the States. For all we know, it could round up between $20 or $30. Also, how come there are two different prices? Is it because they’re still trying to pinpoint the right price, or because they’re going to offer two different tiers?
There’s a lot we don’t know about Nintendo’s online service, and probably won’t until summer at the latest. The Nintendo Switch launches on March 3 with the online service, but it will be free until the fall!
