Logan director James Mangold explains how film is unique

Like it or not, we are living in the age of the superhero movie. With advances in special effects and constantly growing audience appreciation, we’re seeing comic book stories adapted for the big screen like never before. With so many similar, action-based movies in the market, how does a filmmaker differentiate his project from all the others? Logan, the next film starring the incredibly popular Wolverine, and its director James Mangold are hoping to show us something different and create distance from the rest of the pack.

For starters, Logan will be rated R, a rarity in the comic book movie world. It’s also the first time Hugh Jackman will appear as his alter ego in a film with that rating. This alone makes it unique, although not a first as the massive hit Deadpool was also rated R. Besides the rating, however, Mangold went into detail about how the movie will be different saying, “spectacle is not enough.” His approach seems to be going in a different direction from the norm with less focus on explosions, battles and special effects which are ubiquitous within the genre.

“The thing that we’re trying to do differently is trying to invest in character,” Mangold said. “The fact is that a lot of these movies are a collection of set pieces of action with very short connective things basically explaining how we go from action piece A to action piece B. We wanted to make a movie that’s really a drama. If you cut out the action, what you’d have is a powerful drama about interesting character. Whether that makes us different or not, I’ll leave others to judge but I think it was our goal to make a movie that earned its audience from feeling real. Really feeling human or feeling intimate.”

This could prove to be a great approach. The new film is already receiving praise, especially from those who were treated to a sneak peek of the first 40 minutes of the film which were screened at the 20th Century Fox showcase event. The trailer was received very well too. Mangold responded to this.

“Someone told me that the movie made it feel like you might walk out onto the street and run into this Wolverine. That it’s not taking place in a different universe but our own.”

The much anticipated Logan, starring Jackman and Patrick Stewart, hits theaters on March 3, 2017.
