Magic: The Gathering: Nicol Bolas is back

magic the gatheringIt’s announcement day for Wizards of the Coast as they prep for a huge showcase at PAX West in Seattle, WA. When the Nerd Reactor crew interviewed long time head designer of Magic: The Gathering Mark Rosewater at San Diego Comic Con this last month, both he and his team were adamant that the Wizards of the Coast team was going to make a huge impact at PAX West and that there were going to be some massive announcements. Today the team was finally ready to let the cat out of the bag and what we got was pretty awesome.

When we talked to Mark he had mentioned in the interview that ever since the Origins set, the team is approaching storytelling differently. They had built an actual continuity to the Planeswalker Multiverse that can sort of be called a reboot for the lore. We have already seen the building of the Gatewatch, and the destruction of the Eldrazi Titans, but one villain we have not seen make his return to the series yet is Nicol Bolas… until now.  Lead creative designer, Kimberly Krienes, announced that April 28, 2017, players will be introduced to the brand new plane of Amonkhet in a block called Rise Among the Worthy. Amonkhet was described as a “desert oasis world,” and is ruled by Nicol Bolas, himself. The second block in the Amonkhet will be called Hour of Devastation, and will be released on July 14th, 2017.

If that wasn’t enough Nicol Bolas news for you, well there is one more thing. It was also announced that next year, we will also see the return of the Archenemy game-type. Archenemy is a format that is typically played where a team of two or three players go against one person, handicap style, if you have ever watched WWE. In order to tip the scales into the solo players favor, there is a stack of effect cards that severely hinder the team. It’s similar to the Planechase format, but skewed to the benefit of making some incredible 2-v-1 or 3-v-1 matches.

Now, these were just a few of the general announcements we are getting from WotC, but I would definitely expect more surprises over the weekend during PAX. For now, there is a lot to be excited for if you play Magic: The Gathering!
