Sherlock releases new promo photo for season 4

Sherlock Victorian

We have a whole year to watch a new episode of Sherlock, but the cast and crew of the show are not letting us forget about it. BBC’s Sherlock has slowly been dropping hints for the anticipated fourth season, which will premiere sometime in 2017.

Today, they released an official poster with our favorite sleuth with his partner looking handsome as ever. It doesn’t reveal much other than how laid back John Watson has become with his plaid shirt and jeans. His hair is looking pretty fly too. He may be looking too cool considering he now has a child to raise.

sherlock

The first three episodes will be direced by Rachel Talalay (Doctor Who, The Flash) with Toby Jones playing the new villain Culverton Smith.

The first synopsis for the three episodes by Talalay have been released:

Sherlock will return to screens with three brand-new episodes promising laughter, tears, shocks, surprises and extraordinary cases…

Series four begins with the nation’s favourite detective, the mercurial Sherlock Holmes, back once more on British soil, as Doctor Watson and his wife, Mary, prepare for their biggest ever challenge – becoming parents for the first time.

Sherlock returns in 2017.

Honest Trailer does Batman: The Killing Joke

batman killing joke honest trailer

It’s time for another Honest Trailer, and this time the team goes for the jugular with Batman: The Killing Joke, the R-rated animated movie. It takes a jab at the awkward sex scene involving Batman and Batgirl, the failed attempt at making Batgirl a stronger character compared to the comics, the ’90s gay character and many more. If you loved the animated movie with a passion, you may want to look away.

Subjugate all Titans in ‘Attack on Titan: Wings of Freedom’ (PS4 Review)

attackontitan opening

Anime fans, rejoice! You now have a new way to scratch that Attack on Titan itch with Attack on Titan: Wings of Freedom. The game encompasses the entire anime released so far and even goes beyond what fans have seen thanks to some exclusive game content. Relive all the great moments from the first season of the anime with Eren, Mikasa and the rest of the cadet corps and Scout regiment.

Gameplay and Story

For those new to the series, Attack on Titan centers around characters Eren Jaeger, Mikasa Ackerman, and Armin Arlert as they struggle to survive against larger-than-life Titans that have no motives other than devouring all of mankind. The campaign will cover the entirety of the anime’s 25 episode season as well as some extra post-story content that will definitely please the fans. Throughout the campaign, you will swap between various members of the scout regiment, each with their own stats and skills. As you subjugate Titans and complete missions, you will earn experience to level up each character. Each level will bestow helpful abilities such as the ability to boost twice in succession, swap your damaged blades out in mid-air, and even gain the ability to rotate while reeling in to attack.

Besides upgrading your character, you will also be able to craft better blades, ODM (omni-directional movement) and your Scabbards/canisters. Upgrading these are a crucial element of strengthening your characters. Upgrading these various portions of your gear require copious amounts of materials, many of which are acquired by severing specific limbs on Titans. Thankfully the parts that house materials are marked on each Titan, making the hunt for materials during missions easy and intuitive. After completing missions, you will also be rewarded with specific materials as well as bonuses for earning an S-rank, or completing special objectives.

Attack on Titan plays similar to other KOEI Tecmo games made by Omega Force (Dynasty/Samurai Warriors, Toukiden, etc). Their previous games all share a common gameplay formula and this game is no different. Your character will be the deciding factor in every mission. Whether allies or NPCs die or live will all come down to you being able to prioritize and kill as many if not all the targets on the mini-map in the most efficient order. Combat is easy to learn but will take some time and precision to master. Sure you can just attack the nape of the Titans to go for the quick kill, but this won’t always be the case. Often times it will be more efficient to take out a weaker limb to make the Titan more vulnerable, thus easier to land the killing blow. As you progress through the story, you will eventually be confronted by the special Titans from anime. These fights will be the most challenging, as to be expected. Each of the special Titans that you fight will have special conditions that you must fight under such as invulnerabilities to allies, hardened limbs, and various other defenses to overcome.

Attackontitanarmored

Highlights

You can really tell which areas of the game were focused on. High on the list was the studio focus on authenticity to the subject matter. The Titans, characters and environment look to be directly ripped out of the manga and anime. Each scene feels like you are reliving the anime from the perspective of the characters, between the gorgeous visuals of the destructible environments, original Japanese voice actors, and its sheer amount of content. It is further enhanced with extra backstory into the world and its characters. Besides the main story, there is also 50+ episodes of side missions to take on, many of which can be played online with up to 3 friends. Overall I’d have to say that the gameplay, while simple, is just plain fun. It takes me back to the feelings I had when games like Dynasty Warriors were fresh and new. It can feel repetitive at times, but this is remedied by swapping of characters, the crafting system, variety in the missions, and larger-than-life boss battles.

Final Reaction

Attack on Titan: Wings of Freedom does a lot right with very little content. It makes up for its lack of content with excellent execution, especially when compared to other games based off of popular anime series. The action game is a breath of fresh air in the genre of games based off anime. The pacing and storytelling keep it from ever feeling too much like just another hack and slash title from Omega Force. The studio did its research and put together an amazing example of what anime-to-game adaptations should aim for. This is a great time and way to get reacquainted with the series, or for first timers to jump in and see what all the hype is about in regards to one of the most popular currently running anime.

Final Rating:  4/5 Atoms

4-Atoms

Attack on Titan is currently available for PlayStation 4, PS3, PS Vita, Xbox One, and PC.

Nintendo Direct coming tomorrow!

Nintendo-Direct-Logo

Everybody’s favorite source for all Nintendo news will be live tomorrow, September 1st, starting at 7 AM PST. This direct is only going to be focused on 3DS games and will not be the unveiling of the NX that everyone is dying to learn about. The good news is that we know to look forward to even more info on Pokemon Sun/Moon, Mario Party, Yo-Kai 2 content for sure, but what secret projects might Nintendo be revealing tomorrow.

Of all Nintendo’s iconic properties, there is very few that have been worked on currently or have seen a recent release. Personally I’m predicting an announcement for the next handheld Mario Kart or Super Mario bros title since neither of those have gotten any focus in a while. Maybe it will be a new title in the Donkey Kong series, as that has been dormant almost as long.

Regardless of what gets announced during the direct, I’m sure it will be both unsuspected as well as welcomed by fans. You can view the direct tomorrow live on Nintendo’s site. We also will be covering the news as it comes out, so keep it locked and loaded to Nerd Reactor for all your Nintendo news.

Magic: The Gathering: Nicol Bolas is back

magic the gatheringIt’s announcement day for Wizards of the Coast as they prep for a huge showcase at PAX West in Seattle, WA. When the Nerd Reactor crew interviewed long time head designer of Magic: The Gathering Mark Rosewater at San Diego Comic Con this last month, both he and his team were adamant that the Wizards of the Coast team was going to make a huge impact at PAX West and that there were going to be some massive announcements. Today the team was finally ready to let the cat out of the bag and what we got was pretty awesome.

When we talked to Mark he had mentioned in the interview that ever since the Origins set, the team is approaching storytelling differently. They had built an actual continuity to the Planeswalker Multiverse that can sort of be called a reboot for the lore. We have already seen the building of the Gatewatch, and the destruction of the Eldrazi Titans, but one villain we have not seen make his return to the series yet is Nicol Bolas… until now.  Lead creative designer, Kimberly Krienes, announced that April 28, 2017, players will be introduced to the brand new plane of Amonkhet in a block called Rise Among the Worthy. Amonkhet was described as a “desert oasis world,” and is ruled by Nicol Bolas, himself. The second block in the Amonkhet will be called Hour of Devastation, and will be released on July 14th, 2017.

If that wasn’t enough Nicol Bolas news for you, well there is one more thing. It was also announced that next year, we will also see the return of the Archenemy game-type. Archenemy is a format that is typically played where a team of two or three players go against one person, handicap style, if you have ever watched WWE. In order to tip the scales into the solo players favor, there is a stack of effect cards that severely hinder the team. It’s similar to the Planechase format, but skewed to the benefit of making some incredible 2-v-1 or 3-v-1 matches.

Now, these were just a few of the general announcements we are getting from WotC, but I would definitely expect more surprises over the weekend during PAX. For now, there is a lot to be excited for if you play Magic: The Gathering!

Nichols to Guest Star on The Young and The Restless

There's just no stopping Nichelle Nichols. Star Trek's beloved original Uhura will guest star on two episodes of the long-running soap opera The Young and The Restless. Nichols will play Lucinda Winters, the estranged mother of Neil Winters (Kristoff St. John). Her first appearance will come in the show's historic 11,000th episode, airing tomorrow, September 1, and she'll be back again on Monday, September 5. The Young and the Restless airs weekdays at 12:30 p.m. EST/11:30 a.m. PST on CBS Daytime.

Star Trek's Nichelle Nichols on Young and the Restless

"I got the call from The Young and the Restless while I was in San Diego at Comic Con celebrating my role in the 50th anniversary of Star Trek," Nichols said in a statement. "Next thing I knew, I was (transported) into Genoa City and, now, I'm guest-starring on the 11,000th episode of Y&R -- my favorite soap opera, which I have watched for decades. I'm not sure how many more thrills will come my way during this year of celebrations, but one thing that I do know for sure -- follow your dreams and you will live long and prosper."

Star Trek's Nichelle Nichols

Mal Young, executive producer of The Young and The Restless, noted, "For this landmark moment for our iconic show it felt right to cast an equally iconic actress. And who better than the amazing Nichelle Nichols to help us celebrate our 11,000th episode? Actors and crew alike were thrilled to work with such a terrific and notable talent, and we look forward to sharing the results with the viewers.”

Ready for more ‘Stranger Things’? Season 2 is happening!

stranger-things

One thing I learned this morning: you can’t re-post things from Instagram that have copyrighted music in it, and Instagram has no problem in letting you know.

You have to be living under a rock somewhere to have not have heard the immense success of Netflix’s original TV series that debuted this past summer, Stranger Things. Created by The Duffer Brothers, this 1980s-era tale is easily one of the best things that Netflix has put out this year. Creating a perfect blend of sci-fi, fantasy, horror, and all things nerd, the story follows the journey of three young friends and a mysterious girl named Eleven on the search for their missing compadre who disappeared on his way home one night. The series heavily plays in the vein of nostalgia, inspired by the many ’80s works of sci-fi and fantasy films, such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Aliens, and many, many others. Many fans fell in love with the incredible cast of characters, others fell in love with the incredible score and soundtrack that accompanied each scene. Either way, the show was a success on all levels, and fans wanted more. Now, we know we’re going to get more.

Today, Netflix officially announced the renewal of Stranger Things for a second season by releasing a video this morning. Quick note, I tried to re-post the Instagram posting of this video, and Instagram was like “We’ve removed the video you posted at 7:20 AM on August 31, 2016 because” blah blah blah. Whatever. Anyway, the video not only reveals the second season arrival date, which we’re looking at the summer of 2017, but also revealed the season 2 episode titles, or Chapters, which are as listed “Madmax”, “The Boy Who Came Back To Life”, “The Pumpkin Patch”, “The Palace”, “The Storm”, “The Pollywog”, “The Secret Cabin”, “The Brain” and “The Lost Brother”. Check out the video announcement below!

Are you a fan of Stranger Things? What did you think of the last season? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

The second season of Stranger Things will debut on Netflix in the summer of 2017!

Attack Wing Wave 26 Preview -- U.S.S. Enterprise-B

This September, WizKids/NECA will release Star Trek: Attack Wing Wave 26, and StarTrek.com has the exclusive First Look at the ships in the upcoming expansion packs, concluding with the U.S.S. Enterprise-B.

The U.S.S. Enterprise-B is a Federation Excelsior-class ship. On its maiden voyage, the Enterprise-B, under the command of Captain John Harriman, rescued 47 El-Aurian refugees from a Federation transport ship that was caught in an energy distortion. Honored quest, James T. Kirk was believed to be killed during the rescue when the ship’s hull was breached.

Star Trek U.S.S Enterprise B

This version of U.S.S. Enterprise designated NCC-1701-B is a worthy successor and deserves the name Enterprise. With a Primary Weapon Value of 3, 1 Agility, 5 Hull, and 4 Shields this ship is similar to the original U.S.S. Enterprise and subsequent U.S.S. Enterprise-A (Refit), but with some obvious improvements. The special ability for the U.S.S. Enterprise-B allows you to replace one of its Battle Stations, Scan or blue Target Lock tokens that is beside your ship with an Evade Token. The generic version of this ship loses one Shield and one Crew Upgrade Slot compared to the named version.

The Captain in the U.S.S. Enterprise-B Expansion Pack is John Harriman. A level 2 Captain, John Harriman may be inexperienced but is a brave Captain nonetheless. His ability allows your ship to perform an Evade Action as a free Action. If you do this, you then place an Auxiliary Power Token beside your ship. Despite his rough start as a new Captain, John Harriman is a great addition to any evasive fleet that is looking to try and avoid danger at all costs.

Star Trek's Captain John Harriman

No ship named Enterprise would be complete without a Sulu at the Helm. The U.S.S. Enterprise-B boasts Demora Sulu, the daughter of Hikaru Sulu, as Helmswoman.

If your ship is hit, after the Deal Damage phase, you may discard this card to immediately execute a maneuver from your Maneuver Dial with a speed of 3 or less. Following in her father’s footsteps, Demora Sulu will make sure she keeps the ship out of the path of danger.

Star Trek's Sulu

Other upgrades to the U.S.S. Enterprise-B include Improved Phasers which is a 4 dice attack at Range 2-3. This attack is treated as a Primary Weapon and places 2 Time Tokens on the card when you perform the attack. In terms of defense, Deflector Control allows you to Repair 1 Shield Token on your ship or flip up 3 of your disabled Shield Tokens over to their Active sides. You cannot use this Action if your ship is Cloaked.

Resonance Burst is a Tech Upgrade that allows you to target a ship within your forward firing arc and Range 1 of your ship. The target ship must then discard 1 Token (Evade, Battle Stations, Scan or Target Lock) that is beside it, of its choice. If there is a Cloak Token beside the target ship, flip it over to its red side.

Star Trek Resonance Burst

Holo-Communicator allows you to target a friendly ship within Range 1-2. If you do so, you may perform the Action listed on that ship’s Captain Card.

One of the great advantages Federation ships have is the ability to move backwards. Full Reverse makes this ability even better. During the Activation Phase, if you reveal a [Reverse] Maneuver, you may disable this card to add 1 to the speed of that maneuver. No other ship has ever been able to make a 3 reverse maneuver, making the U.S.S. Enterprise-B a one of a kind ship.

The U.S.S. Enterprise-B Expansion Pack is fresh out of dry dock and ready for you to take the helm. Try your luck with the special scenario “Maiden Voyage” and attempt to aid two Federation transport ships before they are destroyed by the energy distortion ribbon. Do you have what it takes to be the Captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise-B?

Visit WizKids/NECA at http://ift.tt/1Lzl5dK for additional information about Star Trek: Attack Wing. And keep an eye on StarTrek.com for more First Looks and previews, coming soon.

Yoga Hosers Review

yoga_hosers_movie_poster_header

Kevin Smith is developing his own trilogy called the “True North Trilogy,” and much like Edgar Wright’s “Cornetto Trilogy,” each film is a different genre. The trilogy began with the 2013 horror film, Tusk, and continues again with the comedy, Yoga Hosers. A slight spin-off of TuskYoga Hosers sees the return of the Colleens, Harley Quinn Smith and Lily-Rose Depp. However, is Yoga Hosers as bad as Tusk or does Kevin Smith improve with the second film in his “True North Trilogy?”

Unfortunately, fans who has loved Kevin Smith for Clerks, Mallrats and Dogma will have to wait even longer for Smith’s return to form. His latest film, Yoga Hosers, is not only a bizarre film but it’s also an unfunny mess.

Yoga Hosers follows teenage girls, Colleen McKenzie (Harley Quinn Smith) and Colleen Collette (Lily-Rose Depp), as they’re trying to get through their boring lives in Canada. When their plans to go party with upperclassmen goes haywire, the Colleens soon discover an ancient evil in their town and it is up to them and legendary man-hunter, Guy LaPointe (Johnny Depp), to take down this threat once and for all.

yoga_hosers_harley_quinn_smith_lily-rose_depp

Kevin Smith is typically a great writer (see: the 3 aforementioned films) but Yoga Hosers is an unfocused mess. The film goes to multiple dead ends before the film goes through something resembling conflict. From this point on, the plot goes from dead end to predictable territory. The film doesn’t seem to veer much from its straight-forward path. The film also relies a lot on Canadian and millennial stereotypes for its laughs. Yes, they’re funny the first couple of times but it does get old.

Yet there’s something weirdly fascinating about having Kevin Smith’s daughter (Harley Quinn Smith) and Johnny Depp’s daughter (Lily-Rose Depp) doing a variation of Smith’s classic Dante and Randal character. On one hand, the gags fit like a glove in this day and age of social media. It’s a sound satire on millennials’ connectivity to their phones. On the other hand, there was some depth to Dante and Randal that is clearly missing from the Colleens. There isn’t much going on with these characters other than to save the world from the Bratzis. They’re just “so basic.”

With all the problems that the script has, the film does capture the essence of those midnight B-movie films that Smith clearly loves so much. Unlike his previous two films, Smith indulges himself in the idiotic genre silliness of this film. This indulgence results in a very weird film with a lot of randomnesses. However, if you can get past the weirdness of foot-tall Nazi sausages with Kevin Smith’s face on it killing people through their rectum then you can handle the weirdness of the film.

yoga_hosers_harley_quinn_smith_johnny_depp_lily-rose_depp

There are a lot of problems in the film, but there are few bright spots in the cast. Justin Long is super funny as the Colleens’ overzealous and pretentious yoga teacher, Yogi Bayer. The ridiculousness of Yogi’s yoga moves brings most of the laughs to the film. Justin Long is seemingly up to do anything and the film is funnier for it. Ralph Garman’s cameo also is worth noting as well. His various celebrity and German impersonations will bring a few smiles to the table.

Unfortunately, the rest of the cast aren’t as good Garman and Long’s much smaller roles. As much as it seemed like a good idea to direct your daughter and your daughter’s best friend, it doesn’t quite work here. Harley Quinn Smith and Lily-Rose Depp clearly show their inexperience in their first major film role. Their dull screen presence wasn’t able to carry this film, even in its short run time. Even though Johnny Depp is unrecognizable as Guy LaPointe, he’s still hit or miss here. At times, he’s funny with his dopiness but other times his delivery falls flat.

Overall, Yoga Hosers isn’t the type of film that has any deep meaning or a point, really. It’s essentially a podcast riff made into a live-action movie and the film struggles to fill its feature length run time with most of the cast serving little purpose to the film. The end result is a messy film with a few bright spots.
