Shazam! opens with $53 million at domestic box office

Shazam

DC and Marvel have been raking in the big bucks for its superhero movies recently. Captain Marvel opened with $153 million during its opening weekend across the nation. Aquaman also did well with $67.8 million during its opening week. Both films have gone to make over $1 billion worldwide each at the box office. The latest superhero movie, Shazam, was released over the weekend, and it has earned $53 million for Warner Bros and DC.

Although $53 million is less than Captain Marvel and Aquaman’s numbers, Warner Bros spent less on the production budget since it only cost $80 million to make. (It was originally estimated to cost between $90 million to $100 million.) If you were to add ticket sales from the advance screening, the opening total would be $56.7 million. Aquaman’s production budget is estimated to be between $160 million to $200 million, and Captain Marvel is between $152 million to $175 million. It’s even more impressive since Shazam! was predicted to gross around $40 million for its opening. The hype for the film thanks to positive reactions from fans and critics seemed to have helped.

In addition to the $53 million domestic opening, the film also earned quite a chunk overseas, giving it a total of $158.8 million worldwide. With a low production budget compared to other superhero films and the box office earnings, Warner Bros and DC should be very happy with the news.

Synopsis: In Billy Batson’s (Asher Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Zachary Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard (Djimon Hounsou). Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong).

The film is directed by David F. Sandberg, who is known for directing horror films like Anabelle: Creation and Lights Out. Henry Gayden worked on the screenplay from a story by Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke and based on the DC character created by Bill Parker and C.C. Beck. Joining Zachary Levi are Mark Strong, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, and Djimon Hounsou, Faithe Herman, Grace Fulton, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Marta Milans, and Cooper Andrews.
