When Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy brought J.J. Abrams on board for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the director left the film with a lot of questions, giving the next director the chance to fill in the holes and create a new story. Rian Johnson has done films with plot twists, and he sure had some twists when doing Star Wars: The Last Jedi. In Force Awakens, Abrams made a big deal about the lightsaber, only to have Luke chuck it aside in The Last Jedi. In Force Awakens, Abrams teased the backstory of Rey, only to have her be a nobody in The Last Jedi. This resulted in mixed reactions from fans, but Lucasfilm has brought Abrams back for Star Wars: Episode IX.

In an interview with MTV during CinemaCon, Johnson has said that he’s okay with Abrams retconning Rey’s family lineage.

“I’ve had a couple of conversations with [Abrams] but I’ve actually really enjoyed sitting back waiting to get my popcorn opening day and see how the thing turns out. I cannot wait,” Johnson said.

Johnson likes to surprise people, so he’s looking forward to Abrams surprising him.

“Like I said, I want to let go of all my expectations, I want to sit back, I want to be entertained. I want to be surprised. I want to be thrilled. I want him to do stuff that I wasn’t expecting him to do and just go along for the ride,” Johnson said. “For me, that’s why I go to the movies.”

Johnson is clearly a director who likes to let go of all expectations, whether that’s behind the cameras or watching a movie in the theater. Of course, this will make fans of franchises upset if a director loves to destroy expectations, especially if it includes beloved characters. Lucasfilm and Kennedy have enough faith in Johnson that they are still continuing with having him create a new Star Wars trilogy.

“Still working on it,” Johnson said about the new trilogy. “I’m excited about it. We’re just working ahead on it and they’re figuring out, slate-wise, how it’s all gonna lay out. They’re working that up, and I’m just chugging away on it, and I can’t wait to get back into it.”

Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters on December 20, 2019. The Disney+ streaming service will also have a series set in the Star Wars universe like The Mandalorian from Jon Favreau.
