Sony comes out guns blazing to kick off CinemaCon 2017.
During the Sony presentation, studio chief Tom Rothman brought out Ryan Gosling to talk about the film. Rothman revealed that Villeneuve tried to keep CGI to a minimum as they continue filming in Budapest. Rothman also revealed that part of Blade Runner 2049 will take place in Las Vegas (Deckard’s sanctuary?). “Every location was real. Every set was there. It was a fully functioning, living, breathing world,” said Gosling. “Prepare to start going steady with the edge of your seats.”
The footage opens with a small sizzle reel of scenes from Ridley Scott’s classic 1982 film. The new footage begins with Officer K (Ryan Gosling) walking through the “cyberpunkish” streets of Los Angeles. He enters a replicant facility run by Jared Leto’s character. The cinematography for this scene is very reminiscent of the original Blade Runner. Leto’s character is a Joker-sounding character with a daddy complex. “Every civilization was built off the back of the disposal workforce. We make angels… But I can only make so many…” It is at this moment when a naked female replicant falls from an amniotic sac hanging in the air. “Happy birthday,” Leto says as he creepily caresses the face of the replicant.
The next scene involves interaction between Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) and Officer K—footage we’ve seen from the first teaser. However, now we see the sandy building come under attack by unknown assailants. “They followed you here,” Deckard says. An explosion blasts through the building, knocking Deckard and K off their feet.
In another scene, Robin Wright’s character is speaking to Officer K as his superior officer. “There is an order to things,” she says. “That’s what we do here: We keep order.”
Ana de Armas’ replicant character is revealed as a potential love interest for Gosling. We then get a quick-cut montage featuring more Gosling, Ana de Armas, and Mackenzie Davis’ character with make-up that is very reminiscent of Ridley Scott’s female replicants.
The final shot shows a bloodied Officer K looking at a book with a bunch of pages torn out of it. “Your story isn’t over yet,” an unknown female voice tells him.
October cannot get here fast enough. If you’re a fan of the original Blade Runner then Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 will definitely impress you. He is one of the hottest filmmakers working today and Blade Runner 2049 is looking like another hit for him.
