Kpow! Thwak! Blurp! Those were the sounds of Batman when Adam West donned the cape back in the ’60s. West has become synonymous with the role and helped make the old Batman show a cult classic. Those were lighter times when Batman was less dark and brooding and more witty and campy. Could there be room for this kind of Batman today? Probably not. When asked by Comicbook.com if he’d ever return as Batman, even for a laugh, here’s how West responded:
“Never, never, never, never,” West said emphatically in an interview. However, he’s not necessarily opposed to returning to a live-action Batman film in another role.
“Absolutely,” the actor said when asked if he’d like to cameo. “You know what I’d love to do? Those guys are all wonderful talents in their own ways, and they approach the role differently, but if I could approach it in a darker way, of course, in a more serious way, however, it would be wonderful to play Bruce Wayne’s father coming back. You know he was murdered, but coming back one dark and stormy lightning-riven night through a library window. Bruce Wayne is there thinking, ‘I’ll never solve this. This is the most difficult thing in my life.’ In comes old dad, like a bat, almost.”
Of course, fans would probably get a kick out of West returning to the series, but it might not work so well in a modern Batman film. Having the audience snicker at an Adam West cameo probably isn’t what Ben Affleck and Warner Bros. are going for. Stan Lee has made numerous cameos in Marvel films, but they’re often much lighter in tone. I guess we’ll have to wait and see if he pops up in the upcoming The Batman.
