Indiana Jones 5 screenplay moving forward without Lucas

As we draw closer to the end of the year, it seems that all the big discussion films that have been announced earlier this year are starting to flesh themselves out, and let us see what they’re shaping up to be. One of those films that was announced was none other than the fifth installment in the Indiana Jones saga, which would bring back Harrison Ford to the titular role. The film would also see the return of director Steven Spielberg to helm the upcoming entry, whose genius and vision brought us three really great parts, and one that most of us would like to forget. Hey, that’s one out four, he’s still 75% capable. One of the names that has always accompanied the films, however, will not returning in the capacity that he used to in the fifth part, and fans aren’t completely sure why.

George Lucas, who had been a part of the writing team for the first four tales of Indiana Jones, as well as an executive producer, seems to not have a hand in the upcoming installment’s story development. Collider spoke with screenwriter David Koepp about his process in creating the next Indy film, and Koepp was honest with them. When the film was first announced, Lucas’ name was nowhere to be found. Spielberg subsequently said Lucas would serve as an executive producer on the film, but in speaking with Koepp, the screenwriter revealed that Lucas is not involved in the story of Indiana Jones 5:

“He’s not, to my knowledge. I’ve had no contact with him.”

Koepp, whose previous work include Jurassic ParkWar of the Worlds, and, yes, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, is slated to be working alongside Philip Kaufman for the upcoming film. Whether or not Lucas will have any part in the writing is still to be seen.
