Ascendant, the fourth chapter in the Divergent series in the works as a series at Starz
Ascendant, which was to be the final chapter in the Divergent series of films, is set to become a series at the premium cable network Starz, according to Deadline. Ascendant was originally set to be released in theaters on June 10, 2017, though back in July of last year, it was reported that the final film would appear in series form. No network or streaming service was announced at that time, and it was unclear if stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James and Ansel Elgort would appear. The Starz series is still reportedly in early stages and it is unclear if they’ll return for this version of the final chapter in the story. The Divergent films are based on the New York Times bestselling book series by Veronica Roth.
Ascendant is being being written/executive produced by Adam Cozad (Tarzan), and directed/executive produced by Lee Toland Krieger (The Age Of Adaline). Cozad and Krieger were attached to the originally planned film version of Ascendant. Though there are no details on the series yet, this move is no surprise as Lionsgate acquired Starz seven months ago.
The Divergent series of books have been perennial New York Times best-sellers since 2011. Book sales of the Divergent trilogy have surged to over 34 million copies worldwide, up from 17 million at the time of Divergent’s March 21, 2014 release. “Allegiant” sold 455,000 copies on its first day of release in 2013 to break a company record for Katherine Tegen Books/HarperCollins Publishers. Pre-orders for “Allegiant” exceeded those of any book in the history of HarperCollins.
The three Divergent films have grossed more than $765 million at the global box office and are among Lionsgate’s highest-grossing films domestically outside The Hunger Games and Twilight franchises.
