Katsuhiro Otomo working on new Akira anime series

Akira

Akira is a 1988 cyberpunk anime movie about friendship and secret government experiences from director Katsuhiro Otomo. It’s based on the 1982 manga, which Otomo also created, and the anime is considered a masterpiece to many fans. Otomo announced this week that a new Akira anime series is on the horizon.

During his panel at Anime Expo 2019, Otomo revealed that the new Akira anime series is happening, and it will be more faithful to the original source. It will also have key points not included in the animated film. Sunrise, the Japanese animation studio that worked on Cowboy Bebop and The Vision of Escaflowne, will be producing the Akira anime series.

And for fans of the 1988 Akira movie, Otomo has announced that a 4K remaster is in the works, and it’s going to be released on April 24, 2020. Japan will be the first to get the 4K version, but Western fans shouldn’t have to worry for too long until it arrives here.

Check out the Akira 4K Ultra Blu-ray and Blu-ray teaser trailer below:

Akira Synopsis: In 1988 the Japanese government drops an atomic bomb on Tokyo after ESP experiments on children go awry. In 2019, 31 years after the nuking of the city, Kaneda, a bike gang leader, tries to save his friend Tetsuo from a secret government project. He battles anti-government activists, greedy politicians, irresponsible scientists and a powerful military leader until Tetsuo’s supernatural powers suddenly manifest. A final battle is fought in Tokyo Olympiad exposing the experiment’s secrets.

It’s a good time to be an Akira fan. Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok) is working on a live-action film.
