Child’s Play TV series aiming for 2020 debut

Child’s Play franchise creator Don Mancini took to Twitter to confirm the window their aiming for with the upcoming Child’s Play TV series titled Chucky, revealing that it will likely be making its debut in 2020, exclusively on SYFY. The series will be set right after the events of the 2017 film Cult of Chucky with Brad Dourif set to return as the voice of the iconic titular killer doll.

Mancini previously confirmed that the new series will have “a whole new world, a bunch of new characters” adding that it “involves children,” with David Kirschner confirming they’d go back to the roots of the series:

“The only thing I think we can say is from the original film that Don wrote, Child’s Play, we are playing with that concept again, the idea of child’s play,” Kirschner said.

“We saw that after seven movies, how can we flip again?” Mancini added “So this time not by merely changing genre but by changing medium. This will give us a different kind of canvas, a much bigger canvas to explore characters and relationships.”

The Child’s Play series has been running for 30 years, with the first film dropping in 1988 to box office success, generally positive reviews and a cult following, spawning six sequels that remained box office successes but slowly started earning more mixed and negative reviews, until the revitalized Curse of Chucky, which returned to the franchise’s horror roots and earned very positive reviews. The most recent installment, Cult of Chucky, was released on Blu-ray and video on demand last October and received strong reviews from critics. Brad Dourif has been a staple of the franchise since its inception, lending his voice to the murderous doll in all of the films.
