Captain Marvel has been a very hot topic, especially with Brie Larson’s comments about there being too many white men at press events. Even with the internet backlash and negative comments that led to Rotten Tomatoes removing them before the film’s release, it did not stop the film from having a huge weekend with moviegoers enjoying the female superhero movie with an “A” Cinemascore. Captain Marvel made an estimated $61.3 million on Friday with $20.7 million on Thursday night, and it’s estimated to make over $145 million over the weekend.
Captain Marvel has also opened internationally with the opening day in China raking an estimated $34.3 million, making it the second highest MCU opening day in that country behind Avengers: Infinity War. The opening day for South Korea is $9.3 million, with Indonesia’s $6.4 million, Brazil’s $5.4 million, Russia’s $5.4 million, UK’s $5.3 million, Australia’s $4.5 million, France’s $4.3 million, Mexico’s $4.1 million, Thailand $3.7 million and Germany’s $3.4 million.
The Marvel Studios film originally had a higher Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes, but as of this writing, it has gone down to 79%. The Audience Score actually went a bit higher and is now resting at 55%.
The film is a bridge between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, and it does contain a teaser for the latter thanks to one of the end credits scenes.
Synopsis: The story follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The film is directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck and written by Boden, Fleck, Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Jac Schaeffer from a story by Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy), Joe Shrapnel, and Anna Waterhouse. It stars Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, Djimon Hounsou as Korath, Lee Pace as Ronan, Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau, Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva, Algenis Perez Soto as Att-Lass, Rune Temte as Bron-Char, McKenna Grace as young Carol Danvers, Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson and Jude Law as the Starforce Commander.
