Alita fans have been trying to show support for Alita: Battle Angel, especially since the film didn’t become a huge blockbuster despite surpassing box office expectations. The #alitachallenge was created to help boost the film’s box office gross during the opening day for Captain Marvel. Some fans used this opportunity to try to convince Fox that there is demand for a sequel, and other used it to show their opposition of Captain Marvel due to Brie Larson’s controversial comments about there being too many white men at press junkets. It’s estimated that Alita: Battle Angel will be making just $3.2 million for its fourth weekend compared to Captain Marvel’s estimated $145-155-plus million.
Captain Marvel has been a very hot topic, with angry fans dropping negative comments on Rotten Tomatoes because of Brie Larson’s comments. This led to the aggregated movie review site to make changes to its audience page, preventing comments from being posted until after the film’s release. Now that the movie is out, the audience score has been very low. However, with the negative user comments, the critics rating dropping, and the #alitachallenge, it did not stop Captain Marvel from becoming a huge hit. Friday’s estimated $61.3 million make it higher than Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’s opening day, plus theatre audiences are enjoying it with an “A” Cinemascore.
Alita: Battle Angel has been praised by theater audiences too with a CinemaScore of A-, but word of mouth hasn’t been strong enough, even with Alita supporters trying to rally others into theaters. The Unapologetically Patriotic Show’s Mindy Robinson urged her fans to skip Captain Marvel and watch Alita instead, saying that Brie Larson is a man hater.
Instead of seeing Captain Marvel and it’s man hating lead actress this weekend, see Alita: Battle Angel instead. It stars a strong female without all the SJW bullsh*t. #alitachallenge https://t.co/hMRofc3R4H

Alita: Battle Angel is currently at $361 million worldwide at the box office from a budget of $170 million. It’s reported that the film needs $350M-$400M to break even, and the film has the potential to cross the $400 million mark. However, it’s going to be a tough time to convince Fox that a sequel should happen. Perhaps when the Avatar sequels make Fox and Disney a lot of money, James Cameron might be able to convince the studios, and that’s if he wants to go ahead with that.
