Star Wars: Episode IX’s J.J. Abrams not worried about Last Jedi reception

Star Wars: The Last Jedi received praises from critics but mixed reactions from audiences. With Star Wars: Episode IX coming out later this year, Walt Disney Studio chairman Alan Horn assures that the film will be back on track. J.J. Abrams, who’s directing the upcoming movie, isn’t at all affected by the negative reactions from The Last Jedi.

“No, I think that every movie is its own movie and, obviously, this is a trilogy,” Abrams replied to Entertainment Tonight when asked about The Last Jedi’s reaction affecting Star Wars: Episode IX. “We brought to that movie all the passion and hard work that we would have no matter what. I think the story speaks for itself.”

He was also asked about Billy Dee Williams making a return to the Star Wars franchise.

“I met him once before and he was such a sweet guy,” Abrams said. “But I got to tell you, I have such unbelievable respect for him. We had a great time and he was wonderful. He had this aura around him. He’s really an incredible man and an incredible actor.”

The conclusion to the Star Wars trilogy is definitely going to be compared to the other trilogies, and Abrams talks about how he hopes people will enjoy it.

“I really can’t wait for you to see it,” Abrams said. “There are a lot of words we all hope that you would feel. Obviously, the biggest, most important one is ‘satisfy.'”

As for the title of Star Wars: Episode IX, Abrams is still tight-lipped about it.

The film is written and directed by J.J. Abrams, with Chris Terrio also helping with writing. It stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, and Billy Dee Williams.

Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters on December 20, 2019.
