Warner Bros has released a new Shazam! TV spot, and it starts off dramatic and dark but then gets lighthearted. The beginning has an awesome scene of Billy Batson jumping off the building at night and shouting “Shazam!” Lightning hits the boy, instantly transforming him into the superhero known as Shazam, aka Captain Marvel. (Yes, there is a Captain Marvel in the DC universe.)
What happens when you have a boy who can transform into an adult with powers? Well, you try to get alcohol at the liquor store, of course. We can also expect a lot of showboating of his different abilities to his peers. Billy and his friend also try to acquire a superhero lair from a real estate agent.
Check out the 53-second TV spot below:
Synopsis: Billy Batson is a streetwise 14-year-old who can magically transform into the adult superhero Shazam simply by shouting out one word. His newfound powers soon get put to the test when he squares off against the evil Dr. Thaddeus Sivana.
The film is directed by David Sandberg, who’s known for directing horror films like Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation, and written by Henry Gayden from a story by Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke.
It stars Asher Angel and Zachary Levi as William “Billy” Batson/Shazam, Mark Strong as Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, Jack Dylan Grazer as Frederick “Freddy” Freeman, Grace Fulton as Mary Bromfield, Ian Chen as Eugene Choi, Jovan Armand as Pedro Peña, Faithe Herman as Darla Dudley, Cooper Andrews as Victor Vasquez, Marta Milans as Rosa Vasquez, and Djimon Hounsou (Marvel’s Captain Marvel, Aquaman) as Shazam.
Shazam! is based on the DC comic book character created by Bill Parker and C. C. Beck in 1939, so he’s a character that’s been around for a while. His powers include flight, superhuman strength, and lightning.
Shazam! flies into theaters on April 5, 2019.
