Free-to-play FPS, Warface, coming to PS4 and Xbox One this fall

Warface

Warface was originally released for PC and Xbox 360, and soon new and old players will get to experience the free-to-play online shooter this fall when it comes to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The game is produced by Crytek, the company that developed Crysis, and it has reached over 40 million registered users since its launch in 2013. We were invited to check out a preview build of the game at The Box SF in San Francisco last week, and what we’ve experienced is a fun and engaging shooter with loads of different modes.

First off, players will get to choose a class for their character, whether it’s a Rifleman, Medic, Engineer or Sniper. Each character will have unique abilities; for example, the Medic will be able to revive downed players and the Engineer can supply ammo. With characters having different classes, teamwork is going to be essential. I can’t tell you how many times my team was able to get the upper hand with a Medic around, especially if it’s last man standing (no respawns).

In addition to choosing a class, players can also customize the character’s gender, outfits, etc. What’s most important for a lot of gamers out there is that it’s being promoted as “play to win, not pay to win.” So an enemy player won’t have an upper hand in gameplay just because they forked over money. Transactions going into the game will be just for cosmetic reasons.

There are also PvE modes (Player vs Environment) where online players will need to face soldiers, cyborgs and zombies while trying to keep each other alive. As for PvP modes (Player vs Player), there are Free for All, Team Deathmatch, Plant the Bomb and Battle Royale. The Battle Royale mode wasn’t available yet, but we did get to play the other modes.

For our gaming session, we played the game on the PlayStation 4 Slim. The controls are very smooth and tight, and FPS players will feel right at home with the movements. Certain classes will have certain advantages, so it’s best to know your enemy and what they can do, or else you can end up being surprised and dead. Having played all the different modes sans Battle Royale, the game is shaping up to be a solid shooter with a variety of modes to keep players engaged. And with Battle Royale mode coming out later, it’s sure to help boost players.

PlayStation 4 users will get Early Access on August 14, and both console versions will be launching in full in September.
