HBO released the new trailer for the anticipated return of Westworld during the Superbowl, marking HBO’s first Superbowl ad in 20 years.
Directed by series co-creator Jonathan Nolan, the ad features the main characters from last season – minus Anthony Hopkins, whose character met his demise in the season finale. After viewing the trailer, we spotted a few things that were quite interesting.
Almost everyone at the last season party is dead. Last season, we saw the executives and board members in Westworld near the saloon, which was decorated beautifully for a party. Unfortunately, based on the trailer, most of them did not make it out alive. We do know the ‘Man in Black’ (Ed Harris) made it out alive. We also know Charlotte Hale (Tessa Thompson) and Elsie Hughes (Shannon Woodward) are alive, but that’s because they are listed in the credits to return.
The Revolution has begun. The hosts are rebelling against their former owners. We have proof of this with Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) hunting down survivors of the board.
She’s not alone in this. She has recruited a band of militant hosts who look incredibly creepy. We do see them with her in the background as she is saying her speech that the world belongs to them.
Not only has the host world gone out of control, the base underground has been seized. Led by Maeve (Thadie Newton), the hosts begin attacking their makers – even the ones not done being constructed!
We see Ashley (Luke Hemsworth) had survived the attack by the hosts up in Westworld, but must now fight in the facilities. Fortunately, we do see he is listed as a series regular, so hopefully, that means he survives for a little bit longer.
It looks as if Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) has joined his fellow hosts in the revolution.
We see him with Dolores, who is dressed in modern attire. Our theory is that she is going to meet with other human executives and blend in. Possibly pretend to be an executive as well. This is only a theory.
Guess what! Ben Barnes returns as Logan. We see a clip where Logan at a social event. This may mean we will be getting more flashbacks in the Man In Black’s life.
More ‘Man in Black’ stories to be heard. We know the ‘Man in Black’ is alive and he’s ready for this revolution.
In the trailer, we had a glimpse of the memory of Maeve holding her daughter’s hand. Maeve is back and is coming for her daughter. There are no signs of her partners, Sylvester (Ptolemy Slocum) and Felix (Leonardo Nam), but we hope they made it out alive.
