“Come with me if you want to live…”
One of the most widely criticized film franchises to date, the Terminator saga has seen its share of change. The franchise started with the humble beginnings of interesting effects and an awesome time traveling death machines, to an outstanding follow-up sequel that boasted incredible special effects from the late effects guru, Stan Winston.
Once the franchise left the hands of director James Cameron, however, is where the story began to delineate from the heart of the films, and where fans began to not flock to theaters for subsequent films in the saga. Even with the most recent film, 2015’s Terminator Genisys, fans began to lose all hope that this franchise would ever get back to its olden days. Well, it looks like we might get one more chance at that, and it might be sooner than you think.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, James Cameron, alongside director Tim Miller, announced that the untitled sequel will be released in theaters July 26, 2019. The new film will be made in collaboration with Cameron, but the biggest aspect is that it will ignore the movies which followed 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day, the last in the Cameron-directed series.
“This is a continuation of the story from Terminator 1 and Terminator 2,” Cameron stated in the interview. “And we’re pretending the other films were a bad dream. Or an alternate timeline, which is permissible in our multi-verse. This was really driven more by [Tim] than anybody, surprisingly, because I came in pretty agnostic about where we took it. The only thing I insisted on was that we somehow revamp it and reinvent it for the 21st century.”
