J.J. Abrams to produce live-action adaption of anime ‘Your Name’

Your Name

Last year, Your Name was the biggest anime feature film to come out of Japan to date. The film shattered box-office records, becoming the highest-grossing anime worldwide, a record that was only previously held by Hayao Miyazaki. It has won numerous awards and it has just been announced that it would be adapted to a live-action movie produced by J.J Abrams.

Your Name is a story about two teenagers who keep having dreams about someone else’s life. They wake up one day only to find each other in opposite bodies. With no understanding of how or why this happened, their only way to communicate is by leaving notes and memos. Together they try to help each other with everyday life, and gradually their bond grows stronger until something happens that I won’t reveal because it’s a major plot point of the movie.

Bad Robot and Paramount Pictures have tapped Oscar-nominated writer Eric Heisserer to pen the script, who was nominated last year for his work on Arrival.

There are no details on the film yet, but it will likely have an American setting which will no doubt disappoint many fans. So far, live-action anime adaptations have had a horrible track record.  With the recently shunned Netflix’s Death Note and the box-office flop that was Ghost in the Shell, Hollywood hasn’t really set the bar high for the genre. We can only hope that with J.J. Abrams and an Oscar-nominated writer behind the project that the film won’t be completely terrible.

Your Names’ original writer and director Makoto Shinkai released a statement on the announcement of the project.

“Your Name is a film created with the innate imaginations of a Japanese team and put together in a domestic medium. When such a work is imbued with Hollywood filmmaking, we may see new possibilities that we had been completely unaware of. I am looking forward to the live-action film with excited anticipation.”

No release date for the film is currently set.
