True Detective Season 3 Being Written With David Milch

True Detective season 3 being written with David Milch on board

Though True Detective season 3 has yet to be green lit by HBO, EW is reporting that at least two episodes have already been written by creator Nic Pizzolatto for a possible pickup. The cable network show has been off the air for two years so far, but it appears that it’s being prepared for a third season. In addition to those two episodes, the site reports that Emmy Award-winning writer David Milch is on board to work with Pizzolatto. Milch is known for creating and writing shows like NYPD Blue (co-created with Steven Bochco), Deadwood and Luck.

Milch is not expected to serve as the showrunner for True Detective season 3, if the show is picked up. That position has yet to be filled. The first two seasons of the show were a ratings success, but the second season suffered a bit in terms of what critics thought. Matthew McConaughey, who starred in the first season of the show, has spoken out about his willingness to reprise his role. Pizzolatto is under contract with HBO through 2018. He is currently developing a Perry Mason series with Robert Downey Jr. for the cable network.

In July 2016, HBO head of programming Casey Bloys spoke about whether or not True Detective season 3 was even a possibility. He said, “…both Nic and HBO are open to another season. I don’t think Nic has a take and he’s working on some other projects. We’re open to somebody else writing it and Nic supervising it. It’s a valuable franchise, it’s not dead, we just don’t have a take for a third season yet.”

The first season of True Detective starred McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, with the second starring Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell, and Rachel McAdams.
