Upon walking into Insomniac’s Beyond Wonderland 2017 in Southern California, I was instantly transported into a different and gorgeous world filled with infectious EDM music. There were thousands of beautiful people wearing revealing clothing, colorful and vibrant lights and decorations that illuminated the night sky.
There were three huge tents and one building, each featuring the hottest EDM artists like Hardwell, Alison Wonderland, Audien, Diplo, Bro Safari, GTA, Markus Schulz, and Martin Solveig. Fans of the Alice in Wonderland tale would definitely dig the names of the stages like Queen’s Domain and Chesire Cove. The Upside Down House stage has a wacky setup (The Mad Hatter would definitely feel at home).
Insomniac tries really hard to make the event as welcoming as possible, with free water stations, interesting art installations, shops, food trucks, lockers, and of course, plenty of portable toilets. The VIP section near Queen’d Domain has its own upscale portable toilets, bar, food truck, and a station for making kandi.
Since we’re Nerd Reactor, I got really excited seeing the geeky outfits and totem poles. Beyond Wonderland’s title for this year was The Endless Sea, and there were many female attendees donning mermaid-inspired attire. Other outfits included Pikachu and Power Rangers. Many groups would have their own totem poles with cool designs like the star from Super Mario Bros.
Of course, the music is the most important part of the event, and there are plenty to choose from. I was able to check out Alice in Wonderland and Hardwell, and these two turned it up for a packed crowd.
If you’re in the SoCal area and into EDM music, dancing, and being a part of a huge and energetic crowd, be sure to check out Beyond Wonderland next year.
