Nintendo unveils Switch commercial for Super Bowl LI

By Reinier Macatangay

The House of Mario is gearing up for a March 3rd Switch console release. Therefore, it makes sense the company plans to run an advertisement during the Super Bowl on Sunday. It is going to be seen by quite a large audience.

For those who do not watch football though (and there are plenty), Nintendo was nice enough to upload the commercial on YouTube. Two versions were actually uploaded, with one of them shorter in length.

In the longer 1:41 video, the commercial starts off with a familiar red and white logo, before switching to a young male adult in his bedroom. Of course, the man picks up his Switch tablet and plays The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. As for background music, Nintendo chose to go with the steady-paced “Believer” by Imagine Dragons.

The commercial switches to an image of an older man and either his son or grandson playing Arms. Both of them use the Joy-Cons as motion-control devices while punching the other character. It looks like some of the Wii controller concepts are not dead after all. Rather, Nintendo refined them using the attachable Switch Joy-Cons.

Then came two teenagers playing the party game 1-2-Switch. The Joy-Cons were used again to shoot each other, and the girl dances in celebration when she wins.

Moving forward, two adults briefly demonstrated Just Dance 2017.

The original man from the bedroom came back on screen afterwards. He took his Switch tablet to the living room and placed it back in the dock, before continuing to play Breath of the Wild using a pro controller.

After that segment, little kids were shown at a party playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and a few seconds later college kids appeared and had fun with Splatoon 2.

A laundry room was the next setting, and two men were engaged in an Ultra Street Fighter II battle using the tablet part of the Switch again. Nintendo wants to showcase the portable aspects, but makes clear the Switch is not a 3DS replacement. If the Switch ends up as a successful console, the company may rethink their position on the 3DS.

An adult party was shown, and a man and woman swung their Joy-Cons high like a lasso. In a scene reminiscent of Harry Potter, both of them pointed the Joy-Cons at each other and lightning powers displayed on the tablet.

The Switch commercial ends with more images of Arms, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2 and Breath of the Wild, before cutting back to a red and white screen reminding viewers of the March 3 date.

March 3rd is not far away. The Switch is coming soon.
