It’s hard to speak to anyone about television nowadays without the new HBO show Westworld coming up in conversation. The series, based on the 1973 Michael Crichton movie of the same name, is even outperforming ratings giant Game of Thrones during similar times its first season, attracting a gross audience of 11.7 million viewers. Considering this, it’s no surprise that president of HBO Programming Casey Bloys announced that Westworld has been renewed for a second season.
Speaking about the renewal of the show as well as two others, Bloys said, “I am thrilled to announce the pickup of our three fall series, all of which have distinctive, original voices. Critics and viewers alike have welcomed Westworld and Insecure, as well as the return of Sarah Jessica Parker to the network after 12 years with Divorce.”
The series takes place in the technologically advanced, Western-themed amusement park called Westworld, populated completely by synthetic androids. It focuses on these androids and their scripted stories as well as the businessmen, engineers, scientists and writers who are responsible for the creations and maintenance of the park as well as the stories within.
Created for television by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, both of whom executive produce and write with Nolan directing some episodes, the science fiction show also benefits from some big names in the world of acting such as Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright, Thandie Newton and James Marsden.
Westworld premiered its ten-episode first season on October 2nd with hour-long episodes airing Sundays at 9:00 p.m. (ET/PT).
