Legendary Pictures has released a new trailer for The Great Wall, starring Matt Damon, during New York Comic Con. You can check it out below.
The Great Wall received bad publicity when the teaser trailer was first released. Critics blasted it since they believed it’s another film where the “white hero” saves the Asians, with some saying it reminded them of The Last Samurai. Even Fresh Off the Boat‘s Constance Wu was heavily criticizing the film. She said, “Our heroes don’t look like Matt Damon.”
Director Zhang Yimou has defended his choice for Damon.
“Our film is not about the construction of the Great Wall. Matt Damon is not playing a role that was originally conceived for a Chinese actor,” Yimou said in a statement to EW. “The arrival of his character in our story is an important plot point. There are five major heroes in our story and he is one of them — the other four are all Chinese.”
In a response to those thinking that his artistic vision was compromised, Yimou had this to say:
“As the director of over 20 Chinese language films and the Beijing Olympics, I have not and will not cast a film in a way that was untrue to my artistic vision. I hope when everyone sees the film and is armed with the facts they will agree.”
This film marks the first English-language production for Yimou and the biggest one to ever be shot entirely in China. It stars Matt Damon, Jing Tian, Pedro Pascal, Willem Dafoe, Hanyu Zhang, Eddie Peng, Lu Han, Kenny Lin, Junkai Wang, Zheng Kai, Cheney Chen, Xuan Huang and Andy Lau. The screenplay is by Carlo Bernard, Doug Miro and Tony Gilroy from a story by Max Brooks, Edward Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz.
The Great Wall hits theaters on February 17, 2017.
