When you think Star Wars music, the first thing that comes to mind (besides the Imperial March) is composer John Williams. He is as synonymous to the franchise as Johnny Depp is to Captain Jack Sparrow. I mean, Williams has scored every Star Wars film to date. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be the first film in the franchise that hasn’t been touched by the magical fingers of Williams (as wrong as that may sound).
Alexandre Desplat was to take the helm of composing for the film, but it seems that has changed. Due to all of the reshoots pushing the schedule back, Desplat was no longer available to create the score. It’s a slight bummer, as he’s a phenomal composer with so many film scores under his belt such as The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The King’s Speech, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows-Part 1 & 2, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and so many more. Now the question remains, who will replace him?
Enter Michael Giaccchino. This name should ring a bell, as he’s worked with none-other-than J.J. Abrams on many different projects. Giaccchino has done everything from video game scores like the Medal of Honor series, the first two Call of Duty games and more, to television series like Alias and Lost, all the way to film with The Incredibles, Up, Star Trek, Cloverfield and Jurassic World. Not to mention also composing the music for Space Mountain at all the Disney parks, as well as the upcoming Dr. Strange and The Incredibles 2. Needless to say he is beyond qualified and already had a budding history with Disney.
As good as Desplat is, I think Giacchino is a better fit for composing, and the film will benefit greatly from it. He does have an existing attachment to Star Wars anyways, as Abrams put him in Force Awakens as First Order Stormtrooper FN-3181. He’s the one that throws Poe Dameron down in front of Kylo Ren in the very beginning of the movie. I’m not only looking forward to the movie, but also what Giacchino will bring with the score. That, and his hilarious track titles that are usually filled with puns.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on December 16th.
