Though the Philadelphia 76ers just wrapped up one of the worst seasons in NBA history (going 10 and 72), they are looking forward by purchasing controlling interest in two eSports teams: Team Dignitas and Apex. This move by the NBA team makes it the first traditional sports team to officially own an eSports team.
Under the ownership of the 76ers, teams Dignitas and Apex will merge under the Team Dignitas banner to become one team. Team Dignitas, a household name in eSports, was founded in 2004. Team Apex, one of the newest teams to enter LCS, was founded just at the beginning of this year.
This announcement comes weeks after the Professional eSports Association (PEA) announced that it will be officially launching in 2017. Seven North American teams – Team Solomid, Cloud9, Team Liquid, Counter Logic Gaming, Immortals, NRG eSports and compLexity Gaming – have committed to being a part of the PEA. With the announcement of the PEA and the 76ers purchasing these two eSports teams, it is definitely an exciting time in eSports. Will the new Team Dignitas join the ranks of the PEA? Only time will tell.
