Titanfall 2’s single-player campaign will be ‘very meaty’

Titanfall is a sci-fi first-person multiplayer shooter that came out for the Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC. One of the many things that fans wanted was a single-player campaign, and thanks to the community feedback and Respawn Entertainment developers having over a decade of experience making single-player games, it will be adding a single-player campaign in the sequel, Titanfall 2. Nerd Reactor was invited to the studio’s offices in Los Angeles, CA, to check out the single-player demonstration and interview some of the developers.

If you’ve seen the E3 gameplay trailer, you’ll get an idea of what we’ve experienced. The demonstration starts with Jack Cooper getting injured after a battle. He discovers a Titan named BT-7274 and a dying Pilot. As you can expect, the dying Pilot kicks the bucket, and BT links up with Cooper. Respawn really wants you to have a connection with BT, as it will be brought to life by the help of a voice actor, who sounds eerily similar to Peter Cullen, the voice of Optimus Prime. (It’s not Cullen.)

BT has three main protocols:

  • The first is to link to a pilot.
  • The second is to uphold the mission.
  • The third is to protect the pilot.

To control BT, players will need to find an extra battery to power it up. The game will have them exploring a beautiful environment and facing creatures as they try to acquire the power source. Once they find it and insert it into BT, it’s time to do some teamwork.

From what I’ve seen so far, the game makes great use of switching off between Titan and Pilot. There will be certain activities that will require just the Pilot, and of course, activities that will require the use of the Titan. Fans of platforming will enjoy double jumping and wall running as a Pilot.

I think players will definitely grow to love BT, as there’ll be some funny interactions with Cooper… like reassuring him that he is in good hands by revealing his odds of dying.

“The hard part about making single player for Titanfall was – what is a single player for Titanfall?” Mohammad Alavi, Titanfall 2’s senior designer, tells Nerd Reactor. “There was nothing else we could draw from. It’s not like we wanted to take all these great mechanics and gameplay design/ideas from Titanfall 1, pick them up and plop them into a hallway with a bunch of explosions. That would not make those designs shine. I feel like a truly good single player is about making the mechanics shine in the best way that they possibly can.”

“It took a long time and a lot of iteration and years to figure out what a Titanfall level is,” he explained. “That’s kind of funny because there is no single Titanfall level. There’s so much variety and so much breath of gameplay in the Titanfall single player; you can’t point to any one level and be like, ‘That’s the experience.’ You have to kind of play the whole thing. There’s a lot there.”

As for the game’s length, Alavi says, “The common consensus is that it’s a lot longer than people expect it to be. I can tell you for a fact, it’s very meaty. You’re going to get your money’s worth.”

Titanfall 2 will be available for the PS4, Xbox One and PC on October 28, 2016.
