The Star Trek universe lost a key role player this week. Barry Jenner, who passed away on Monday, was a long time character actor who has appeared on dozens of TV shows including Family Matters, JAG, and Walker: Texas Ranger. But his most iconic role among Trekkers is as Admiral William Ross, a character who frequently sparred with Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) aboard Deep Space Nine. He may be held in the same regard as the various Enterprise captains, but Jenner was a critical supporting actor in his role as Admiral Ross in Deep Space Nine.
Jenner was a frequent celebrity on the Star Trek Convention circuit and I can personally attest that he always treated his fans with the utmost kindness and consideration. While some actors may view conventions with disdain, Jenner genuinely wanted to engage with his fans (of which there are many) and interact with them on the show floor.
So let’s salute this invaluable member of the Star Trek universe as he travels into the next frontier. You’ll be missed, Mr. Jenner.
