Final Fantasy XV is less than two months away from release, and fans will be able to experience the series through other mediums including Brotherhood: Final Fantasy XV and Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV. The latter features voice actors Sean Bean, Lena Headey and Aaron Paul. At San Diego Comic-Con, Square Enix held a Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV panel, revealing some new information about the full-length movie.
The panel had plenty of surprises in store which was moderated by IGN’s Marty Sliva. It featured a few different panelists including director Takeshi Nozue, Square Enix localization editor and lead writer Dan Inoue, Liam Mulvey (Libertus’ voice and motion capture actor), Andrea Tivadar (Crowe’s motion capture model) and Square Enix’s U.S. Product Marketing Director Mat Kishimoto. Nozue talked about working on the film, and how it is something that both long-time fans of the Final Fantasy series can enjoy, as well as newcomers. While Final Fantasy XV is shown through Noctis’ perspective, Kingsglaive is shown through the perspective of the king. Afterwards, Nozue showed off some behind-the-scenes footage that showed Sean Bean, Aaron Paul, and Lena Headey doing voice-over work for the film.
Nozue faced three big challenges. The first was his greatest challenge, that being that English isn’t his first language. Seeing as his English skills were limited, he worked with the Square Enix localization team on the movie including everything with the voice actors. The second challenge was the characters’ expressions. Being a full-fledged film, Nozue wanted to make sure the characters’ expressions were realistic. They used facial scanning as well as full-motion capture for the actors. The final challenge was getting the movie done before the game. The team only had a year to complete Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV (which is now out in Japan).
Everyone in attendance was then treated to a few behind-the-scenes look at the making of Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV which centered around the motion capture and facial scanning that was needed to truly bring the characters to life in the movie. Both Liam and Andrea joked about the black marker dots on their face and how they had to spend an hour scrubbing their faces to try and remove the markings. They talked about wearing the motion capture equipment which made movement a bit difficult. It then led to another behind-the-scenes look that showed off the process of building the character models from the motion capture process all the way to the final result.
The trailer for the movie was then shown with a message from Aaron Paul:
Marty then asked a few questions from fans on social media. The first was whether characters from the game like Noctis will appear in the film. Nozue didn’t want to spoil anything but mentioned both the game and movie will share characters including Luna, Ravus and some bad guys. When asked whether the movie would spoil the game, Marketing Director Mat Kishimoto mentioned that while the game and film run side by side, fans won’t have to worry about any spoilers. The last question asked was about Sean Bean, Aaron Paul, and Lena Headey. Why were those three big names chosen for the roles? Nozue said that as they were looking to cast the characters, they had to ask, “Do they fit the role?” Nix is an outsider and Aaron Paul has played an outsider really well in film and television. For Nozue, Sean Bean is a natural fit for a King, while Lena Headey has a royal grace and a strong core. While any of the actors could have said no, it helped that Aaron Paul’s brother is a big Final Fantasy fan.
To end the panel, a final message from Aaron Paul was played where he lets everyone in attendance know that they would be some of the first people in the world to see the opening sequence to the film. Attendees were treated with around 10 minutes of non-stop action.
After the opening sequence, it was announced that Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV would be released digitally on August 30th and on Blu-ray and DVD on October 4th.
