*Spoilers ahead*
Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy is considered by many to be one of the best superhero franchises of all time. Some say it’s the absolute best. However, though a critical and commercial powerhouse, its ending has frustrated some fans who believe the franchise should continue, or that there wasn’t enough closure.
If you recall, at the end of The Dark Knight Rises, Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s John Blake enters the Batcave, presumably to take over as Batman He’s essentially carrying on the symbol of the caped crusader as Christian Bale’s Bruce Wayne lives a private life in Europe with Anne Hathaway’s Selina Kyle.
In a typical franchise, this would lead neatly into a fourth film, but Nolan’s franchise was always meant as a trilogy with a defined beginning, middle and end. Doubtless, many have wondered if Gordon-Levitt would be in a Dark Knight 4 to assume the coveted role of Batman. Apparently, his thinking is in line with that of Nolan, as he believes the ending of The Dark Knight Rises is the most fitting conclusion for Nolan’s vision and wouldn’t want to move forward with an additional film.
Cinemablend sat down with Gordon-Levitt during the Los Angeles press day for his upcoming movie, Snowden. Though most of the conversation was about the new Oliver Stone film, Gordon-Levitt was also asked if playing John Blake as Batman in his own film was something he considered.
“I know we’re all used to the sort of Marvel movies, which are just kind of endless series,” replied Gordon-Levitt. “They don’t really have a beginning, middle, and end. But I think Nolan very much thought of that movie as a conclusion, and there’s a theme that runs through all three of those movies that begins in the first movie, runs through the second movie and it concludes in that moment where he says that Batman is more than a man, Batman is a symbol. And so to have another man other than Bruce Wayne kind of becoming Batman at the end of that trilogy, I think that’s the perfect ending to that story.”
As much as it would’ve been nice to see such a talented actor take over the role of Batman, there’s no question it would disrupt that sense of conclusion and as well as the tightness and focus of that story arc. It may have worked, but Nolan had a certain plan and he saw it through to the end. He did it his way; few directors of super hero movies can honestly say that.
