It appears the would-be Clown Prince of Crime will return next season on Gotham. Many fans were left puzzled after the sudden demise of fan-favorite Cameron Monaghan last season, especially when it seemed like the show was heavily hinting that his character would later become Batman’s most infamous villain. This past season there have been many Easter eggs hinting that he would return, and in the season finale, many fans believed they heard Jerome’s infamous laugh when a bunch of prisoners escaped from Indian Hill.
Gotham producer John Stephens confirmed in a recent interview that Monaghan would return and that the show has big plans for him moving forward. Stephens says do not expect Jerome to just pop up next season. There will be a big build over time to his eventually return, and ultimately, he will be a major player in Season 4.
“You’ll have these underground movements that have started to talk about Jerome and what he represented and how he’s going to come back like in the days of John the Baptist. Setting the stage that if there is a season 4, hopefully we’ll bring that back in a much bigger way and you’ll see these different versions of the Joker myth.”
He’s kind of ominous with that “if season 4 happens” line. It is no secret that rating for the show have been on the decline since it first premiered in 2014. We can only hope that the show will live long enough to see Monaghan’s triumphant return as the fully realized version of The Joker.
Season 3 of Gotham is set to air later this fall.
