The Internet was in an uproar last week when the trailer for The Great Wall, starring Matt Damon, was revealed. Critics of the trailer argued that it was just the latest example of Hollywood “whitewashing” traditional Asian stories (i.e The Last Samurai).
Constance Wu, star of ABC’s hit sitcom Fresh off the Boat, has weighed in with her perspective. In a post on Twitter, she opened up about the continued issues Hollywood has with casting Asians in lead roles.
Said Wu, “We have to stop perpetuating the racist myth that a only [sic] white man can save the world.” This isn’t the first time Wu has made her thoughts on the subjects of Asians in Hollywood clear. She has given interviews in the past where she criticized the lack of opportunities given to Asian actors and actresses in Hollywood. It’s clear that Wu is not going to back down from this fight.
