Action Comics #1 is pretty much the holy grail of comics. People seek it out for its incredibly high value due to its age and the fact that it contains the first appearance of possibly the most iconic superhero of all time: Superman. Although it only cost 10 cents when it came out way back in 1938, CNN reports that the ultra rare comic book just sold for nearly $1 million on Thursday.
Dallas-based Heritage Auctions says that the issue of Action Comics #1 that sold last week was part of a collection owned by a fan who bought it in the 1990s for $26,000. That’s a pretty great return on investment. What’s more, it was only expected to sell for $750,000 instead of the $956,000 it received.
“Few copies of this comic survive, let alone come to auction with such a bright cover,” said Lon Allen, managing director of comics and comic art at Heritage Auctions.
In fact, only about 100 copies of the comic book are believed to exist decades after production.
