The initial reviews for Warner Bros. and DC’s Suicide Squad have been pretty rough so far, but a few of us here at Nerd Reactor watched Suicide Squad last night and had opinions of our own. Granted, there were some issues with the films, but the film, itself, was pretty fun and enjoyable, and definitely didn’t deserve the bashing that Rotten Tomatoes (a site that loves Michael Moore films) gave Suicide Squad.

I consider myself a fan of both DC and Marvel while the rest of our team, who saw it last night, are Marvel fanboys. Overall, we enjoyed the film and thought the critics were much harsher than they should have been. The film even included 2 Justice League cameos that were perfectly placed. Since we had a 5 Bad Things about Suicide Squad article, I am going to talk about 5 great things about the film, without trying to give spoilers.

1. The Introductions

The way they introduced the main characters was pretty phenomenal, and, in my opinion, one of the best parts of the film. It gave enough backstory to care about the core character and big names in Suicide Squad. Each scene was fun, and true to the heart of the film. What made it even better was that the main guard in the film, Griggs – who was played by Ike Barinholtz – added his unique humor to every introduction, creating a common web of hate between everyone towards him in the film.

2. The Chemistry

When they finally unlock each member of the Suicide Squad, and let them prepare for their mission, you start to see them interact with one another, and the chemistry between them is immediate. You see the development of flirtation between Harley and the team, and watch as they go from being individual selfish loners to becoming an actual team.

3. The Joker

Jared Leto’s Joker is definitely one of the most true-to-comics Joker I have seen. People love Heath Ledger’s broken Joker, whose background dictated why he became the way he was. But this Joke was different; this Joker was a complete crazy person because of the chemicals, and just because he enjoyed it. Jared Leto seemed to pull his inspiration from the much crazier versions of Joker that we see in the animated DC films such as Batman: Under the Red Hood, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns 1 & 2, and Batman: The Killing Joke, making his character the most unique, and one of the best, Jokers I’ve seen so far.

4. Deadshot

When we think of Will Smith, we generally think of Independence Day and Men In Black. But its been a very long time since we have seen a character of his that we like, and Deadshot was definitely one we love. Will Smith came back with a vengeance, bringing his unique style of sarcasm and humor to his character, making his character relatable, funny, yet still deadly. The scenes where we had a gun in hand were some of the best, and showed off his talent as a marksman, skills that could give even the Punisher a run for his money.

5. Harley Quinn

Margot Robbie was the perfect choice for this role. Not only did she play the crazy Joker-obsessed Harley, but also as the former sane psychiatrist version of herself. In both forms, she was great, and provided fans with a strong character who wasn’t the damsel-in-distress, but just a crazy girl who happened to be in love with a crazy guy. She stole nearly every scene she was in, even if it was just to give a small smile.

Let us know what you thought of the film, and if you think the critics were too harsh, or if they were right.
