According to TheWrap, This is Us actor Ron Cephas Jones is in talks to play the Wizard in New Line’s DC superhero film Shazam!
In the comics, the Wizard gives teenager Bill Batson (Asher Angel) the powers to magically transform into adult superhero, Shazam (Zachary Levi).
If true, Jones will join cast members, Mark Strong, who will play villain Doctor Sivana, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews and Faithe Herman. Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke have written the script with David F. Sandberg as director. Production for the film begins next month in Toronto.
Shazam first appeared in DC Comics in 1939 with the name ‘Captain Marvel’. Created by C.C. Beck and Bill Parker, Shazam is the alter ego of Billy Batson, a teenager who can transform into the the superhero with the power of six gods after shouting, “Shazam!”.
Jones is best known for his Emmy-nominated role of William Hill on the NBC hit series This is Us. Jones is no stranger to comic book heroes. The actor was previously in Marvel’s Luke Cage as Bobby Fish.
Shazam! is set to hit theaters on April 4th, 2019.
