Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens to $45 million at Thursday previews

Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm‘s Star Wars: The Last Jedi earned an estimated $45 million at Thursday evening previews, which marks the second-highest domestic preview gross of all time, coming in +55% ahead of Rogue One ($29 million) and -21% behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($57 million). IMAX previews grossed an estimated $5.3 million, in line with Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Thursday opening record of $5.37 million.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi began its international rollout on December 13 in 14 material markets, followed by an additional 34 material markets on December 14, opening #1 in each (except Turkey and Korea) and bringing its two-day international total to an estimated $60.8 million and a global total of $105.8 million. In addition to its North American debut, Star Wars: The Last Jedi adds Japan and Spain today for a day-and-date release across all territories except China, where it opens on January 5.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is written and directed by Rian Johnson (BrickLooper) and continues the storylines introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, welcoming back cast members Mark Hamill, the late Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Lupita Nyong’o, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis. New cast members will include Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro, Academy Award nominee Laura Dern, and newcomer Kelly Marie Tran.

The sequel is produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman and executive produced by J.J. Abrams, Jason McGatlin, and Tom Karnowski.
