‘It’ opens big for horror movie with $123 million

It Movie

Nothing like a film with a creepy clown to jump start the domestic box office weekend. It has opened with $123 million, breaking many records including the biggest September opening, biggest Fall opening, biggest R-rated horror film opening, and biggest horror film opening weekend. I also want to add that the #2 movie, the romantic comedy Home Again starring Reese Witherspoon, opened with just $9 million this week, making a huge gap for the #1 and #2 movie. New Line should be very happy about the numbers, along with director Andres Muschietti.

The studios initially estimated that it would open with $117 million, but with $123 million, it has beaten Spider-Man: Homecoming. (The latter has recently beaten Wonder Woman for total worldwide box office gross.) Now It is at the #3 spot for the biggest opening weekend in 2017, coming behind Beauty and the Beast and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

The previous movie to break the opening box office record for an R-rated horror film was Paranormal Activity 3, and that one opened with $52.5 million. Deadpool still remains supreme as the #1 box office opening for an R-rated film ($132.4 million). However, It came in at second place. Not too shabby.

It is currently at 86% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Synopsis: Seven young outcasts in Derry, Maine, are about to face their worst nightmare — an ancient, shape-shifting evil that emerges from the sewer every 27 years to prey on the town’s children. Banding together over the course of one horrifying summer, the friends must overcome their own personal fears to battle the murderous, bloodthirsty clown known as Pennywise.

The film stars Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise, Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) as Richie Tozier, Jaeden Lieberher as Bill Denbrough, Jeremy Ray Taylor as Ben Hanscom, and Sophia Lillis as Beverly Marsh.
