‘Godzilla 2’ Director Michael Dougherty taps into classic film for sequel

“The arrogance of men is thinking nature is in our control… Let them fight.”

Isn’t it great to have the convenience of things like social media, where we can get updates on things in an instant? Want to know who went to the party last night? Check who checked in on Facebook. Want to know what’s going on at the latest expo event? Find out who’s live-tweeting it on Twitter. Want to catch images of the latest film-in-production from the filmmakers directly? Yeah, convenience is bliss.

Michael Dougherty is one of those filmmakers that just loves to do what he learned in preschool: how to share. Earlier today, the Godzilla 2 director took to Twitter, and released a cryptic image of something that looks like it belongs on some executive’s desk…to the untrained eye. Take a look below, and make a few guesses yourself:

Unsure about what that is? Noob. That right there is a replica of weapon of mass destruction, itself, called the “Oxygen Destroyer.” It first appeared in the classic 1954 film, Godzilla, where it served as the means to rid the world of the Giant Lizard. The death machine does exactly what its name says; it destroys oxygen atoms, causing who ever it was targeting to suffocate and die.

The item plays a huge proponent in most of the classic films, as it appears several times throughout the saga. So to see it reemerge in the upcoming sequel shows that Dougherty not only has respect for the property, but also wants to pay homage to the films that his project is based on. How cool is that?

The film stars Millie Bobby Brown, Vera Farmiga, Kyle Chandler, Charles Dance, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, Bradley Whitford, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Thomas Middleditch, Aisha Hinds, and Zhang Ziyi.

Godzilla 2 destroys theaters March 22, 2019.
