George R.R. Martin’s novella Nightflyers has received a pilot order from Syfy

Syfy has given a pilot order to the adaptation of George R.R. Martin novella Nightflyers. Martin is the author of the novel series “A Song of Ice and Fire” that the HBO show Game of Thrones is based on. Nightflyers will take place aboard “a ship with a small, tightknit crew and a reclusive captain,” according to the show’s official logline, according to Variety.

The novella Nightflyers was written back in 1987 and was turned into a film the same year. The project has been in development since May. The pilot will be executive produced by Gene Klein and David Bartis from Suits. The TV adaptation was written by Jeff Buhler (Jacob’s Ladder). Martin will not be involved with the pilot.

“We are looking forward to diving deeper into George R.R. Martin’s chilling world of ‘Nightflyers,’” said Bill McGoldrick, executive vice president of scripted development for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment. “The script that Jeff delivered encapsulates this classic sci-fi horror story and adapts it to a platform where we can truly explore the depths of madness.”

In the show, the ship will feature “eight maverick scientists and a powerful telepath.” According to the description, “They travel aboard The Nightflyer – a ship with a small tightknit crew and a reclusive captain. But when terrifying and violent events begin to take place they start to question each other, and surviving the journey proves harder than anyone thought.”

HBO’s Game of Thrones will return next month with its seventh season, with one more to go before the end of the series. There are currently five prequels in development.
