Nintendo Switch LA launch event recap

By Frank Hurtado

Last week I had the chance to be a part of Nintendo’s Switch launch event at Raleigh Studios in Los Angeles. Nintendo has always had a great track record when it comes to hosting fan events. I have attended its Splatoon and 3DS events in Santa Monica City in the past, which were both exceptional. This event surpassed those two events in every way. Their event décor was akin to what their usual offerings look like at E3.

Much like E3, the Switch event gave fans who were invited the chance to play a handful of games that were yet to be released. The standouts for me were Ultra Street Fighter 2, Disgaea 5, and Sonic Mania—all of which will be receiving a day-one purchase from me after having demoed them at this event. Nintendo also showcased some games that were available for purchase for those who couldn’t pick a Switch console at launch or to help people who are on the fence about picking up the system. While I was there I tried Snipperclips, a game I was on the fence about. After playing it and having a lot of fun with it, my mind was made up on this fantastic little cooperative puzzle game.

One of the things that this event did that stood out from its previous event offerings was its snack cart lineup. Nintendo had a lineup of hot dogs, churros, popcorn, cotton candy, drinks, and ice cream carts all with very cute names to tie into the feel and theme of the event such as the “Mario’s hotdog cart.” It was very nice to sit and chat with some of the other attendees while having a nice cold ice cream bar on a warm Friday afternoon.

All in all, this event was a great experience. It was a great way to build hype for their newest console, the Switch. This event was a great way to have fans try out their newest console as well as games that were available and games that are still to come. The set design was great as always and added to the ambiance to the event that made fans feel as though they were at E3 playing these games. After having tried all of the games at the event I am very excited for what the Switch has on the horizon.
