Avatar sequel delayed yet again

After the astronomical amount of money that Avatar made at the box office, a sequel was inevitable. Director James Cameron has been working on sequels for ages now, but the project has been plagued with delays. Avatar 2‘s release date shifted from Christmas 2016 to Christmas 2017 to Christmas 2018, and now it looks like it’s being changed yet again. In an interview with the Toronto Star, Cameron admitted the sequel won’t be released next year.

“Well, 2018 is not happening,” the director said. “We haven’t announced a firm release date.”

Considering the herculean task before him, this is understandable. The man is planning to make a whopping four sequels simultaneously. He went into greater detail about this concept.

“What people have to understand is that this is a cadence of releases,” he said. “So, we’re not making Avatar 2, we’re making Avatar 2, 3, 4 and 5. It’s an epic undertaking. It’s not unlike building the Three Gorges dam. So I know where I’m going to be for the next eight years of my life. It’s not an unreasonable time frame if you think about it.”

When Cameron announced the large number of sequels, he mentioned release dates for 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2024, though considering the recent delay, it’s unclear whether the latter dates will remain intact. The good news is that the product sounds like it’s going to be fantastic.

“So far, the art I’m seeing is, in pure imagination, really far beyond the first film,” Cameron said. “It’s going to be a true epic saga.”

Hopefully, the leads will still be alive to shoot the things when the time comes.
