Tom Hanks has written, as well as star in, a new film called Greyhound, which will follow a Navy Destroyer, with him as the captain. Gary Goetzman, who is Hank’s partner at Playtone, Inc., will produce while Aaron Schneider will direct the film, sporting a budget of around $35 million. Tom Hanks is definitely one of the greatest actors of our generation, and has certainly proven himself to be a WWII history fan. With Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, and The Pacific, Tom Hanks seems to be emotionally- and economically- connected to this era.

War History Online summarizes these ships as follows: “Destroyers were first built at the end of the 19th century and by the early 1940’s the United States’ newly commissioned destroyers would be equipped with  5″ dual-purpose guns which were capable of surface and anti-aircraft fire. They also sported 20mm and 40mm anti-aircraft guns, quintuple mounts of 21″ torpedoes, and depth charge projectors. The ships displaced 2100 tons and were capable of speeds in excess of 35 knots, hence the nickname Greyhound.”.

In the mean time, Hank’s is also working on his Spielberg-partnered mini-series, Masters of the Sky, which follows United States’ 8th Air Force, known as the “Mighty Eight,” which is said to arrive in 2017. This mini-series will follow the Band of Brothers format, focusing on one particular group, versus a broader observation, much like The Pacific. Once these are all released, then Tom Hanks will have officially covered the major branches of the Military circa WWII: Army, Marines, Air Force, and Navy.

You can check out a teaser to Masters of the Sky below.
