With Denis Villeneuve’s Dune remake arriving (hopefully) at the end of the year, more tie-ins will start hitting stores in the coming months, including a few books that will explore the futuristic world that author Frank Herbert introduced in 1965. One of these is a new version of a Dune prequel novel co-written by Herbert’s son, Brian Herbert. Via The Hollywood Reporter, Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson are collaborating with Boom! Studios on a comic adaptation of Dune: House Atreides.

Herbert and Anderson published Dune: House Atreides in 1999, thirteen years after the elder Herbert passed away. The story takes place three decades before the original novel and traces the earlier years of several key Dune characters. That includes Leto Atreides, the father of Dune protagonist Paul Atreides. Additionally, House Atreides was the first novel in the Prelude to Dune series that spawned two more installments.

Boom!’s comic adaptation of House Atreides will span 12 issues. However, THR’s report doesn’t specify the artist that Herbert and Anderson are working with. The writers are also adapting the original Dune into a new graphic novel trilogy. That project will feature the artistic talents of Raúl Allén and Patricia Martín, with covers by Bill Sienkiewicz.

“It’s been more than 20 years since Brian and I published House Atreides, the first of our new novels set in Frank Herbert’s Dune universe,” said Anderson in a statement. “We loved exploring all the possibilities Frank created for us, and those books introduced a whole new audience to Dune. Now, in adapting House Atreides into a vibrant graphic format, it’s like rediscovering the story and the world all over again. So much of the novel is visually driven, the union of comics and House Atreides is a natural.”

Dune: House Atreides will hit comic book stores later this year.
