Call Me By Your Name Sequel Development Gets Delayed Due to the Pandemic

Call Me By Your Name sequel development gets delayed due to the pandemic

After more than two years since Call Me By Your Name had its theatrical release in 2017, award-winning director Luca Guadagnino has finally opened about the long-awaited sequel for his critically-acclaimed coming-of-age romance drama film. Speaking with Italian outlet Gay.it, Guadagnino has confirmed that the Call Me By Your Name sequel, which will be based on André Aciman’s 2019 sequel novel titled Find Me, is still in active development as he was supposed to go to America to meet its potential writer.

However, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the meeting was postponed just like all other film productions in Hollywood right now. In addition, the director also revealed that its main cast, including Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer, are indeed set to reprise their iconic roles as Elio and Oliver.

“I was going to America to meet a writer I love very much, whose name I don’t want to mention, to talk about the second part,” Guadagnino said. “Unfortunately, everything is canceled. Of course, it’s a great pleasure to work with Timothée Chalamet, Armie Hammer, Michael Stulhbarg, Esther Garrel, and the other actors. They will all be there in the new film.”

Based on André Aciman’s acclaimed novel of the same name and directed by Luca Guadagnino, Call Me By Your Name is set in the summer of 1983 in the north of Italy. It followed Elio Perlman (Timothée Chalamet), a precocious 17- year-old American-Italian boy, spends his days in his family’s 17th century villa transcribing and playing classical music, reading, and flirting with his friend Marzia (Esther Garrel). Elio enjoys a close relationship with his father (Michael Stuhlbarg), an eminent professor specializing in Greco-Roman culture, and his mother Annella (Amira Casar), a translator, who favor him with the fruits of high culture in a setting that overflows with natural delights.

While Elio’s sophistication and intellectual gifts suggest he is already a fully-fledged adult, there is much that yet remains innocent and unformed about him, particularly about matters of the heart. One day, Oliver (Armie Hammer), a charming American scholar working on his doctorate, arrives as the annual summer intern tasked with helping Elio’s father. Amid the sun-drenched splendor of the setting, Elio and Oliver discover the heady beauty of awakening desire over the course of a summer that will alter their lives forever.

Starring Armie Hammer, Timothée Chalamet and Michael Stuhlbarg, Call Me by Your Name was produced by Peter Spears, Emilie Georges, Guadagnino, James Ivory, Marco Morabito, Howard Rosenman, and Rodrigo Teixeira. Naima Abed, Tom Dolby, Sophie Mas, Lourenco Sant’Anna, Derek Simonds and Margarethe Baillou served as executive producers. Original songs in the film were written and performed by Sufjan Stevens.

Since its theatrical release in 2017, the film had received numerous praises and had garnered a number of nominations and awards including winning one out of four Oscar Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay. Due to his incredible performance as Elio, the film immediately launched Timothée Chalamet into stardom and is now regarded as one of the sought-after young actors of this generation. Chalamet recently appeared in Greta Gerwig’s star-studded adaptation of Little Women and will next be seen in Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch and Denis Villeneuve’s Dune.
