Westworld Season 3 Episode 2 Recap

In the previous episode of HBO’s Westworld, Maeve awoke in a WWII Italy setting, and Bernard set off for Westworld off China. In Westworld Season 3 Episode 2, Maeve discovered where she really was, and Bernard received some help from fellow host, Stubbs.

Construct

In the Nazi-occupied town, Maeve found herself in an apartment with men tied to chairs. Hector arrived and told her to come with him. Unfortunately, as they exited the town, Nazi soldiers stopped them and found a map on Hector. They were able to escape but ran into more Nazis at the airport. Hector, who was called Ettore in this world, called Maeve “Isabella”, and Maeve knew that he wasn’t self-aware. Hector died in the standoff, so Maeve killed herself to escape.

Maeve awoke in the Mesa Hub. After leaving the technicians, Lee Sizemore found her. Maeve had believed he’d died. However, Lee started malfunctioning, and she realized that he was just a copy of the original Lee. Then, Maeve discovered it was more than just him. They were all in a construct and not in the real world.

Crippling the System

Other techs arrived at Lee’s office. Maeve asked them what the square-root of negative one was, and the two techs went in communicative circles to reason the answer. It slowed the simulation.

Maeve went back in the simulated WWII world. While Lee kept several techs debating the impossible math question, Maeve set up the Nazi soldiers to all shoot themselves at the same time. This disable the simulation enough for Maeve to access the network and see the real world. She found the hard drive where she was stored and hacked a robot to retrieve her. It didn’t make it very far before it was destroyed.

In a fancy house, Maeve woke up and found Serac. He told her that they were in the real world and hinted at Insight. It had stopped working. Dolores’s presence made it unable to predict the future. Serac wanted Maeve to find and kill Dolores. Unfortunately, he had the power to control her.

New Directive

Westworld Season 3 Episode 2 Recap

When Bernard arrived at Westworld, he found Ashley Stubbs and realized that he’d been a host all along. He repaired Stubbs and told him that he was back because of Dolores. Bernard was looking for Maeve. Stubbs took Bernard to her. They found that her pearl was taken out of her body.

Bernard and Stubbs found an office and used a tablet to discover that Maeve’s control unit was missing. Since the Mesa’s tablets were clean, Bernard wanted to run a diagnostic again to discover any corruption. While Bernard regained some memory of what happened with Dolores, the guards found them. Stubbs held them off, and they escaped.

As Bernard was leaving Westworld, he gave Stubbs a new directive: to protect Bernard Lowe at all costs. Instead of going back to the park, Stubbs joined Bernard.
