The Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society is getting a name change. The LAOFCS will now be known as the Hollywood Critics Association. In addition to its name change announcement, the Hollywood Critics Association announced the nominees for its 3rd annual awards show. This year, Quentin Tarantino’s Hollywood love letter, Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood leads the pack with 11 nominations—including Best Picture.
Right behind Once is Martin Scorsese’s epic gangster biopic, The Irishman, which nabbed a total of 9 nominations. Tied with The Irishman is Trey Edward Schults’modern family drama, Waves. Despite all of the controversy, Joker was able to get 7 nominations—including Best Picture and a Best Actor nomination for Joaquin Phoenix. Rounding out the nominations list is Lulu Wang’s excellent family drama, The Farewell, who got 7 nominations and Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story which got 6.
As a whole, Netflix was able to put together a total number of 20 nominations (The Irishman: 9, Marriage Story: 6, Dolemite is My Name: 3, American Factory: 1, and The Two Popes: 1). A24 is not that far behind, earning 18 nominations, while Sony got 16 nominations.
“The creation and goal of this organization has always been about celebrating film while embracing diversity and elevating underrepresented voices. We believe that our mission is universal, and this is why we changed our name to be reflective of that. As we continue to push for change, we want to be part of the solution, which means slowly building a community of passionate critics who are reflective of the USA and the world as a whole,” states Hollywood Critics Association’s Chairman, Scott Menzel.
